2005 年 1 月 30 日 星期日 【陰】

On 25th January, 2005, I was invited to attend a gathering which was organized by Wilson Kwok, my former supervisor when I worked for the Christian Action. A week before the gathering, I was surprised that I received a phone call from Lok Tang, my ex-colleague. He wondered whether I could show up on the coming Tuesday night. He told me that Wilson and most of the TDSs would attend the reunion. I promised to be present at once. I looked forward to meeting my colleagues.

On that night I met Sum Wong, my companion, in Landmark North at 20:35. We entered the Chinese restaurant together. Wilson Kwok, Lok Tang, Shine Lam, Cherry Kong, Benny Cheung, Tony Ng, Sum Wong and I showed up at the reunion. Only Fai Lau and Cherrie did not show up. The gathering had been started for an hour when Sum and I arrived at the restaurant. I was late because I had to stay in my company until half past seven.

We did not see each other for almost half a year. We sat around the table, making small talk. We focused on our jobs. Suddenly Shine asked me why Fai, Sum and I resigned from the TDA program at the same time. At that moment, I was embarrassed by her question. Honestly, Wilson and most of the TDSs understood why we quitted simultaneously. Shine may be the only one who did not know the reason. The most important point is no one likes to mention that reason again. This was an embarrassing situation. The best way to break the stalemate was to talk something else.

The meal lasted for two hours. We left the restaurant around 22:15. The waiter sent us a bill for four hundred something. I thought Wilson Kwok was treating, but it turned out to be a Dutch treat. Everyone paid about sixty dollars. To be perfectly honest, the food that we ordered is not as good as I expected. Besides, Sum and I both agreed that Fai missed a wonderful meal. I look forward to the next gathering.

I like attending the reunion, but I do not like talking about the past. What a ridiculous conclusion!

Yesterday, 22nd January 2005, was the birthday of Alan’s sister. Alan Lo is one of my best friends. We met in secondary school ten years ago. Yesterday was not only a girl’s birthday, but also a remarkable day in world history.

Yesterday was indeed a memorable day in Russian history while it did not come into public notice in these days, even in Russia. Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday Incident of Russia. A hundred years ago, in 1905, there was a large-scale demonstration held in Russia which was led by Father George Gapon. Thousands of Russian commoners marched to the Winter Palace, the Czar palace. The petition asked for government reform and an end to the Russo-Japanese War. However, Czar Nicholas II took no notice of the demands of the Russian demonstrators. Finally, Cossacks fired at the peaceful petitioners. Thousands of unarmed workers were massacred. The incident was known as the “Bloody Sunday”.

Nobody remembers the “Bloody Sunday” in this very day, except Alan Lo. It is because his sister was born on the same day of the Bloody Sunday Incident. When I looked back on this incident, I learnt that history is always written by blood. A new era always comes after thousands of people buried under the ground. No one remembers them, except history itself.

PS. Being a political student, I nearly forget this historic incident. It was thanks to Alan who reminded me this historical moment. Besides, hope his nose will recover soon.

I bought a lot of things in different bookstores yesterday evening. First of all, I brought two books in the Commercial Press of Sheung Shui. The first one was about the relation and unification of Korea; another one was about three unsettled cases of Qing Dynasty. After that, I visited two other bookstores in Mongkok. I bought two books in one of the bookstores. They were “Napoleon Empire” and “Reading the History from Wars”. Next, I bought two books and two DVDs in Sino-Books Limited of Mongkok. The two books were “Advanced Grammar in Use” and “Self testing on Logic”. The two DVDs were “A Christmas Carol” and “The Fantasia Collection”. Finally I bought a VCD box set about “Spiderman” in Sino Centre of Mongkok. I totally spent four hundred something for all of the above.

Today is Christmas Day. I wish everyone has a wonderful Christmas. I have been working for the Ying Kiu Education Centre over three months. Yesterday, we held a Christmas party in our centre. The party started at 10:00. There were almost 70 participants took part in the party, including teachers and students. I was responsible to prepare a series of games. Our students like the games very much. Everyone could get two Christmas presents. Even though the party ended at 13:00, I have to stay in the centre until 17:00. I was the last one to leave the institution.

I have three days off from today. However, I had a bad cough, I need to stay at home. I saw doctor this morning. I have to take some rest. I planned to stay at home watching some VCDs and reading some books.

Recently, I have been reading a very interesting book which is written by a Taiwanese. The book was entitled as "I will teach you 50 methods to cheat". The book is about how to become a successful cheater. This book uses a lot of historical examples to explain the art of cheat. I learnt a lot from this book even though I have not finished reading it yet.

I have been a tutor for almost three months. In the past three months, I tried hard to adapt myself to the new working environment. Now I adapt to this condition. The colleagues are very kind. They helped me a lot during this three months. Frankly, I do not like my job. I work ten hours a day and another two and a half hours for travel every day. I am not a staff member in the company, but a “partner”. That means I only earn commission without basic salary. My life is routine and dull. I hope there is something new in my life.

Last Thursday night, on 25th November 2004, I received a call from Christy Mak. She told me something about the current situation of the Christian Action. I have disappointed since I learnt that the management of the TDA program is in a terrible mess. My TDAs suffered from the poor management of the Christian Action. I back my TDA, Christy.

The time now is 10:50. I have to come back to my work. A new day starts.

Yesterday morning, around 6:30, when I got up I suddenly felt dizzy. I went into a coma for a minute. My parents were very nervous and called 999 at once. I had become conscious before the ambulance arrived. The policemen and the medics arrived within five minutes. After that, I was sent to the Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital. When I arrived at the hospital, the doctor did a few tests for me, including Electrocardiogram (ECG), Blood test, X-ray (chest), measuring blood pressure and body temperature. The doctor concluded that I was fine after finishing all those medical tests. However, I was asked to stay in the hospital for further observation. I was put in a ward with other five patients. The other five patients were all over fifty. I was the youngest patient at the same floor.

When I reached the hospital around 7:15, I called my boss, Miss Kong, reporting my health situation and requesting two days sick leave. Miss Tin was to be a substitute teacher for me. Many thanks for her help.

During the time I stayed in the hospital, I read the book “The Prince” by Machiavelli again. I enjoyed reading it and it was the only thing I can do in the ward.

I stayed in the hospital until 19:20. I was discharged from hospital at the same day even although my doctor advised me to stay in the hospital for one more night. But my parents and I decided to refuse. My parents took me out.

The time now is 11:27, 9th November 2004. I felt a little bit faint even though I discharged from the hospital over 24 hours. I have to go to the hospital for getting back my medical certificate later today.

On 17th October, 2004, one of my best classmates, Ruby Ling, had her wedding party. The wedding took place in the Hong Kong Intercontinental Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. Her groom is Michael Chau.

When I reached the hotel around 19:45, I met my classmates, including Connie Yueng, Eric Leung, Frankie Tsang, Henry Ng, Sarah Lo, Sindy Choi, Tony Poon, Windy Lau and Van Tse. They are all my good friends.

Ruby invited many guests, including all her relatives and friends. There were totally 16 tables in the banquet hall. The guests took photos with the bride and the groom. Then we saw a short film about the bride and the groom. We all had great dinner and a wonderful night.

Besides, I am sick today. I caught a cold a few days ago.

2004 年 10 月 3 日 星期日 【乍暖還寒】

In the last 30 days, I have read several good books that I would like to introduce them to all of my friends. I hope all of my readers like them. First and foremost, “The Prince”, written by Machiavelli, it is one of the most famous political bibles. “The Prince” is about how to become a good king or a good leader. Most of the theories mentioned from the book still hold true, even though this book was written in 16 century, four hundred years from now. Today, the words “The Prince” is commonly known as the bible of political theory. Nowadays, many political scientists often published their work under the title of “The Prince”, Dick Morris and Dr. Ivan Choy, are two of them. I think all political scientists should read it.

The second book that I would like to introduce is “1587, A Year of No Significance”, written by Dr. Ray Huang. Dr. Huang was a famous American historian. He introduced his “marco-history” through presenting the different prospects of Ming Dynasty of China, including the king, the chancellor, the officials, the General, the philosopher and so on. The book adopted a new angle to present the history of Ming Dynasty. Furthermore, Dr. Huang developed a new prospect to read history. This book developed a new research method of studying history and went beyond the boundary of Chinese history. I believe all historians should take a look of the book.

Last but not least, I would like to share a well-known book of the public, “Who moved my cheese?”, by Dr. Spencer Johnson. It is very thin book, about a hundred pages. I finished reading it within one and a half hour. The book is talking about a very simple idea, “change”. Everyone fears changes with no exception. However, everybody should have the courage to face the changes. Many would be cowards if they do not have courage to face the reality.

I hope my readers would like the books that I mentioned above. May my friends would benefit from reading them.

By the way, I watched two VCDs today. One is the “Pirates of the Caribbean, the curse of the Black Pearl” and another is “Bad Boys II”. Both of them are action adventure films. They both treated me great, but cost me an arm and a leg, $61 for two. Most of the time, I only do two things every Sunday or holidays, watching movies and reading books. What a god damn holiday!
