1915: Born on Sakhalin Island, Russia on this day in 1915, Yul Brynner will be forever identified with his role as the King of Siam in The King and I. He won a Tony Award for the Broadway show, then an Oscar for the movie, and would later tour in periodic revivals of the musical almost until the end of his life. He is seen in a still from the film.
1767: Americas sixth President John Quincy Adams, seen in a portrait, was born on this day in 1767, the son of the second President John Adams. The widely traveled and Harvard educated younger Adams served in many governmental positions, helped negotiate peace with Britain following the War of 1812, and is generally thought to have been the driving force behind the Monroe Doctrine苔ll before his one disappointing term as president from 1825 to 1829.

1804: The Revolutionary War figure Alexander Hamilton, seen in a portrait, was killed in a duel by Aaron Burr on this day in 1804. A co-author of the famed Federalist Papers and first Secretary of the Treasury, he led the Federalist party until his death at the hands of rival faction leader Burr.

1992: After being seized in the country he once led and then convicted in US Federal court, General Manuel Noriega of Panama was sentenced to forty years in prison on this day in 1992 for his involvement in drug trafficking. Although President Bushs 1989 invasion of Panama and seizure of the much-maligned dictator was decreed as being illegal, Noriega's conviction was not overturned on appeal and he remains in jail. He is seen in a 1984 headshot.

1920: TV journalist and commentator David Brinkley has brought his probing curiosity and sometimes curmudgeonly interview style to three decades of television broadcasting. With his gruff voice and strategically raised eyebrows he has become a favorite cynical gadfly on Sunday morning political round table talk shows. Brinkley is seen in a 1950s headshot.
1947: Arlo Guthrie, the son of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie, became a singer and songwriter and scored his biggest hit in 1969 with the sly, whimsical anti-war tune Alices Restaurant. In it, the narrator drolly explains how an accidental act of civil disobedience earned him inadvertent but much-desired draft exemption苔n enormously popular theme at the time of the height of the Vietnam War. Guthrie is seen performing in the 1970s.
1943: Tennis great Arthur Ashe became famous for his intelligence and accomplishments on and off the court. He was the first African-American to win the mens title at Wimbledon (1975) and the US Open (1968), then later captained several Davis Cup teams. Retired from tennis he wrote a book on the history of African-Americans in sports, then acted as a spokesman for those infected with the AIDS virus which ultimately killed him. Ashe is seen in a 1990s headshot.
Died:
1941: By the time of his death on this day in 1941 the charismatic pianist and songwriter Jelly Roll Morton had entered the pantheon of early jazz figures. His fluency with classical and orchestral themes and melodies allowed him to introduce sophisticated harmonies and arrangements to what had previously been considered bordello music. Several stage shows have been based on his rich scandal-filled life. He is seen in a rather melancholy portrait at the piano.

1815: The short-reigning and expedient King Louis XVIII reentered Paris on this day in 1815 to reassert his claim to the throne only four months after being chased from the city by a resurgent Napoleon Bonaparte. The latters ultimate defeat at Waterloo made it safe for him to return, but Louis then served as a mediocre and not always constitutionally-abiding monarch until his death in 1824. Louis XVIII is seen seated at a desk.
1553: Lady Jane Grey was declared Queen of England on this day in 1553, three days after ascending to the throne of the recently deceased King Edward VI. Her reign lasted less than a fortnight, however, as pro-Catholic forces loyal to Mary Tudor (later Mary I) quickly imprisoned Queen Jane and her husband in the Tower of London, where they were later executed on February 2, 1554. She is seen in a portrait.

1937: David Hockney, the versatile and eclectic English artist
1947: OJ Simpson ~ the first player to rush for 2,000 yards in a season (1973) during his NFL career (1969-1979). Later a popular commentator on TVs 'Monday Night Football', Simpson's career was virtually ruined by his 1994 indictment, and subsequent acquittal, for the double murder of his ex-wife and her friend in the most sensationalized media circus of the century. Simpson is seen smiling in happier days.

1950: Americas twelfth President, Zachary Taylor, died in office on this day in 1850. A tough and decisive leader during the Southern Indian Wars of the 1830's, he won fame as a General defending the recently annexed State of Texas during the Mexican War of 1846.
