1966: Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow were wed in Las Vegas, the first marriage for the twenty-one year old bride and the third for the fifty year old groom. At the time a star on TVs wildly popular 'Peyton Place', Farrow would divorce Sinatra in a few years and subsequently marry composer and conductor Andre Previn. They are seen together on their wedding day.

1950: The maiden flight of the Boeing 707 passenger air liner was made on this day in 1950, with the pioneering four-engined jet flying high over Puget Sound near Seattle. After more testing, the 219 seat craft would revolutionize commercial air travel in the 1950s, making long-range flights practical and economical for the average consumer. A 1960s Pan-Am jet is seen.
1877: The first Wimbledon tennis finals were played on this day in 1877, with Spencer Gore winning the mens title and Maude Wilson winning the women's. Some two hundred spectators were in attendance at the tournament. Now the oldest and most venerable annual tennis competition in the world. One of the first Wimbledon matches is seen.

1922: Born on this day in 1922, Senator George McGovern of South Dakota was the lonely brave upholder of liberalism as the Democratic candidate against President Richard Nixon in the 1972 election. A contemporary, friend and correspondent of both Dante and Boccaccio, he wrote numerous sonnets and songs of idealized, unrequited love to his unobtainable muse Laura, which are considered enduring classics of the period. 1792: American Revolutionary War naval hero John Paul Jones died unnoticed in Paris on this day in 1792, fourteen years after uttering his famous vow I have not yet begun to fight in a fierce sea battle of Flamborough with British naval forces. He won that engagement, but was soon out of a job when the Continental Navy was dissolved following the French entry into the war with England. Jones is seen aboard a ship in a portrait.

1955: Disneyland opened its gates in 1955, admitting thousands of patrons who already knew and loved the Disney characters on which the pioneering theme park was based. 1938: Douglas Wrong Way Corrigan supposedly flew from New York to Ireland by mistake on this day in 1938, instead of landing at his intended destination of California.
