1931: Kate Smith sang on televisions first scheduled program on this day in 1931, broadcast on RCA's channel WZRBX to a handful of viewers who had access to early TV sets. Already a very popular radio performer at the time, Smith would make regular appearances on television as the medium became more widespread in the 1950s. She is seen performing onstage.
1861: The First Battle of Bull Run was fought on this day in 1861 between Union and Confederate troops in the first major engagement of the war. Casualties ran to some 25% of the combined 24,000 men in combat in the muddled fitful encounter in rural Virginia, with Union troops ultimately retreating to Washington before the Southern army fully realized its victory. 1960: Sirimavo Bandaranaikei was sworn in as the premier of Ceylon on this day in 1960, making her the first woman in world history to serve in that capacity as an elected head of state. She would remain in office for another five years, then lead her country (later renamed Sri Lanka) again from 1970 to 1977. She is seen in a 1961 photo.
1925: Biology teacher John Scopes was convicted of teaching evolution contrary to Tennessee State law on this day in 1925 after a sensationally publicized Monkey Trial pitting defense attorney Clarence Darrow against the conservative political leader (and prosecutor) William Jennings Bryan. Darrow and Scopes are seen smiling in 1925.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois on this day in 1899, Ernest Hemingway was a reporter and ambulance driver before writing his first stories and novels. The Sun Also Rises and A Farewell to Arms cemented his literary fame by the 1920s, making his terse, unadorned style a model for countless writers to follow. He won the Nobel Prize in literature in 1954, then shot himself seven years later. Hemingway is seen in a 1940s portrait.

Sirimavo Bandaranaike makes history when she is elected the first-ever female head of government.
Mrs Sirimavo Bandaranaike, widow of Ceylon's assassinated prime minister Solomon Bandaranaike, has been elected the world's first woman prime minister.
Ceylon was made a republic in 1972 and renamed Sri Lanka.

Soon after his One small step for man speech, Armstrong was joined by Edwin Buzz Aldrin on the lunar surface.
1988: The bloody eight year long war between Iran and Iraq ended on this day in 1988 with the Ayatollah Khomeinis acceptance of UN cease-fire Resolution 598. Some one million casualties were suffered on both sides (with nearly twice that number injured) in a vicious border war which ultimately resulted in the same boundary between the two nations as there had been when the conflict began. 1976: Henry Hank Aaron hit the final home run of his twenty-two year career on this day in 1976, making a lifetime total of 775 homers, a still-standing record in baseball. He had previously broken the record held by Babe Ruth in 1974, and remains one of the most beloved figures ever to play the game.

1919: One of the two men to first reach the summit of Mt. Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary was born on this day in 1919. The affable lanky New Zealander topped the 29,028 foot peak on May 29, 1953 with Tenzing Norgay, then later conducted a winter expedition across Antarctica.
1938: Natalie Wood was a charming preteen movie star in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and Miracle on 34th Street. Later she attempted to shed her wholesome girl-next-door image by adding currents of repressed sexuality to her roles in Rebel Without A Cause and Splendor in the Grass. She was nominated for the Academy Award three times before her tragic 1981 death in a boating accident.
1938: Diana Rigg was already a serious Shakespearean actress when she won the role of Emma Peel on TVs 'The Avengers' which made her a worldwide star and minor sex symbol. Lithe, deadly and witty, her character became a cult figure to American audiences during its many reruns. Rigg's more serious work includes her recent acclaimed Medea on Broadway.
1890: Theda Bara became the first truly manufactured sex symbol in Hollywood, a well publicized and often scantily-clad alternative to the innocent, virginal, girlish heroines so common to the silent film era. She was generally cast in sultry exotic roles in such films as The Devils Daughter and The She-Devil. She is seen in an Egyptian costume.
