A double murderer has escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane - the second killer to do so in less than three weeks.
On this day in 1902 King Edward VII of England was coronated; his assumption of the throne had been delayed due to an appendectomy operation. King Edward proved to be well-liked during his reign and earned a reputation as a man-about-town. He did much to improve Englands relations with the rest of Europe, particularily France, Russia and Germany. He was succeeded by Edward the VIII.
On this day in 1945 an atomic bomb was dropped by the United States on Nagasaki, Japan. The weapon, nicknamed Fat Man", was the second to be dropped on the country in a few days; it killed 74, 800 people. On this day in 1969 infamous cult leader Charles Manson and some of his Family" began their killing spree in Beverly Hills, California. Those killed on this first night were film starlet Sharon Tate, three of her house guests and a neighbor. Manson claimed that he and his followers were saving their victims from themselves.
On this day in 1944 the United States took Guam back from the Japanese. Guam, a United States territory since 1898, had been captured by the Japanese three years earlier as part of their World War II assault. On this day, 17,000 soldiers were killed and 500 were taken prisoner.
On this day in 1974 then-President Richard M. Nixon announced that he would resign from his elected post. On this day in 1942 actor David Steinberg was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Steinberg is applauded for his unique sense of humor which he used during the years he hosted the David Frost' and 'Dick Cavett' shows on television in the 1970s. Steinberg also tried his hand at directing with the film Paternity", which had only a lukewarm reception.
British writer Izaak Walton. Walton, a friend of poet John Donne, is known for his book on fish The Compleat Angler, or the Contemplative Mans Recreation", first published in 1653. The book addressed not only fish and fishing holes, but also moral reflections, verses and addages. Walton was also a biographer of Donne, Wotten, Hooker and others.
English poet and playwright John Dryden was appointed poet laureate of England in the 1660s. He wrote in a quasi-neoclassical mode; he is often refered to as a transitional writer that bridged the gap between the metaphysical poets and the classicists. Drydens most acclaimed work is the blank verse play All for Love", written in the 1670s.

On this day in 1967 British playwright Joe Orton was killed in his London apartment. Ortons work was widely staged in England and New York during the 1960s. His most acclaimed plays include the sardonic 'Loot' and the urbanely violent 'What the Butler Saw'. Orton was murdered by his live-in lover, Kenneth Halliwell.
On this day in 1936 muckraker" Lincoln (Joseph Lincoln) Steffens died in Carmel, California. Steffens, a journalist who specialized in exposing corruption in high places, was a financial expert who worked on the magazines McClure's'. He later left the mgazine trade to cover events in the Mexican Revolution. Steffens counted Lenin among his close friends in later life.

The Spanish Armada was defeated on this day in 1588 by English vessels under the command of Francis Drake. The Spanish war fleet, nicknamed the Invincible" fleet, was formed by King Philip II to invade England and abolish Protestant rule there. The fleet consisted of about 130 ships.

On this day in 1945 the treacherous Battle of Britain began. The Battle of Britain was an airwar between German Luftwaffe and the British Royal Airforce began by the Germans with the intent of weakening British defenses and morale before invading their country. The Luftwaffe had a greater number of men and planes during this battle, although the British proved superior technically and strategically which ultimately led them to victory in this encounter.
On this day in 1858 Ottawa, Ontario became the capital of Canada. The city originated as a logging center named Bytown in the 1820s during the constructrion of the Rideau Canal which divides the city. The town became Ottawa , an anglicization of the Indian name Outawouias, in the 1850s. The city is now primarily a government and tourist center.
On this day in 1789 the United States established the War Department and appointed Henry Knox as the first secretary of war. Knox, a Revolutionary War hero, served as War Secretary under his close friend George Washington. He proposed the creation of the West Point Military Academy while he was in office.
On this day in 1807 the first commercial steamboat The Clermont" made its first regular voyage from New York City to Albany, New York; Captain Robert Fulton invented and commanded the vessel. Fulton, whom also invented the submarine, launched the first steamboat on the Seine in France, upon the success of his invention he brought it back to the United States. He built other boats after the Clermont including the first steam-powered warship.
On this day in 1830 Louis-Phillipe DOrleans accepted the King Crown of France. He had been previously exiled from his homeland during which time he travelled throughout Europe and the Americas. Louis-Phillipe returned to France in 1815 as a compromise candidate for the crown. During his reign he was unwilling to extend voting rights which led to his abdictation in the 1848 revolution.

Archaeologist and anthropologist Louis (Seymour Bazett) Leakey was born on this day in 1903 in Kabete, East Africa. Leakey is best known for his work with fossils in Tanzania which ultimately proved the origin of man was in Africa. Leakeys research was considered controversial because Western scientists did not want to concede to his findings.
On this day in 1904 the first African-American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Ralph Johnson Bunche, was born in Detroit, Michigan. Bunche, a United States diplomat, served at the United Nations beginning in the 1940s and became under secretary of political affairs there. He supervised the 1949 Israeli-Arab armistice which earned him the Nobel.
On this day in 1926 American media personality and writer Stan Freberg was born in Pasadena, California. Frebergs radio satire of soap operas, John and Martha" brought him to wide fame in the 1950s. He also developed the popular television puppet show 'Time for Beanie'.

On this day in 1957 greatly adored comedian Oliver Hardy died in North Hollywood, California. Hardy, along with his partner Stan Laurel, were two of the most popular slapstick pairs on film in the 1930s and 40s. Hardys character was an overbearing, overweight grouch, while Laurel played up to him as a slim dim-wit with hilarious results. Some of the duo's most popular films include Way Out West" and "The Flying Deuces".
British naval officer Robert Blake looks every bit the naval hero. Blake, Englands greatest marine officer with the exception of Nelson, proved his capability many times. He shattered the Dutch in the Portland in the 1650s, destroyed pirate fleets off the coast of Tunis, and abominated a Spanish treasureship off the coast of Santa Cruz.
On this day in 1821 Queen Caroline of England (Caroline of Brunswick) died. in London. Carolines marriage to her first cousin George IV, then the Prince of Wales, turned out to be disagreeable to both parties: she was banquished to Blackheath. The Princess was rumored to be adulterous which led to an attempt by the Prince to divorce her and thereby deprive her of the future throne. A court trial ended in the Queen's favor, due largely to public sympathy. She was later denied entry to the coronation of her husband as king. She died a few days later.

On this day in 1806 Emperor Francis II of Austria was abdicated and the Holy Roman Empires reign (since medieval times) was officially over. Francis II was defeated by Napoleon Bonaparte whom as Emperor of France refused to recognize his title. He soon joined forces with Napoleon.
On this day in 1744 the first Shakers, led by Mother" Ann Lee, arrived in New York. The Quakers, originally named the United Society of Believers in Christs Second Appearing, were believed to be a cultish sect in their native England; they fled to the New World in search religious freedom.

On this day in 1809 master poet Lord Alfred Tennyson was born in Lincolnshire, England. Tennyson succeeded William Wordsworth as poet laureate of England in the 1850s greatly due to the success and genius of his collection Poems", which included 'Oenone' and 'The Lotus Eaters' and the epic poem 'In Memoriam'. Tennyson's "official" work included 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' and 'Idylls of the King', both based on Arthurian legends. He is studied widely for his meter of language mastery.
New York City bootlegger, Dutch Schultz (Arthur Flegenheimer), was born on this day in 1900. The Dutchman" was a big-time ganster during the Prohibition era in the 1920s and early 1930s; he dealt in everything from making bets to moonshine. Schultzs most notorious act was his alleged order to have rival gang boss "Legs" Diamond killed; another contribution to the myth that enshrouds Schultz.

American born architect Edward Durell Stone died in New York City on this day in 1978. Stone, a modernistic designer, realized immensly important structures, usually commissioned by governements. Among his more monumental creations are the JFK Center in Washington, D.C. and New York Cultural Center at the United States Embassy in New Delhi, India.
American film director and screenwriter Preston Sturges died on this day in 1959 in New York City. Sturges was known for his sophisticated and urbane scripts which he insisted on directing, a rarity in the 1940s; he led other screenwriters to do the same. Sturges won an Academy Award for screenwriting for his film The Great McGinty" about a transient who becomes a governor, which is laden with typical Sturges humor.
Respected newsreporter Harry Reasoner died on this day, 1991, in Norwalk, Connecticut. Reasoner, a television journalist since the 1950s, gained great fame in his field on the news magazine 60 Minutes', which he co-edited and co-anchored during its first three seasons. He left '60 Minutes' to anchor ABC News in the early 1970s, only to return again in the late 1970s; he remained with CBS until his retirement.
English character actor Sir Cedric (Webster) Hardwicke died on this day in 1964 in New York City. Hardwicke was typically cast as a villain on both the stage and the screen. His most memorable roles are the evildoers he played in The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and "Suspicion", the Hitchcock classic.
