Ten dead in NYC ferry disaster
Accident investigators are working into the night
At least 10 people have died and 34 injured after a ferry operating across New York City harbour crashed as it came into dock at Staten Island during high winds.
The boat hit enormous pilings at St George's Terminal, which ripped through the vessel leaving a mass of splintered wood, steel and glass.
1978: Polish bishop is new Pope
Cardinals at the Vatican choose the first non-Italian Pope for more than 400 years.
Pope John Paul II celebrated the 25th year of his papacy in 2003, and his term of office has been among the longest in the history of the Church.
It was almost cut brutally short in 1981, when a Turkish fanatic, Mehmet al-Agca, shot and seriously wounded him in St Peter's Square.
After a long recovery, he visited and forgave his would-be assassin.
His approach has been "hands-on", with frequent humour and informality, endearing him to millions across the world.
However, he has taken a conservative stand against divorce, abortion, homosexual unions and rights for unmarried couples, and his critics accuse him of being out of touch with the modern world.
He has travelled widely, visiting more than 100 countries. One of the earliest trips, in 1979, was to Poland.
Recently, though, concern over his health has been growing. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2001, and has had increasing trouble completing speeches.
In 2002 he returned to his native Poland. The visit was widely viewed as a farewell to the Catholic community closest to his heart.

A 91-year-old man has admitted stealing $1,999 from a bank in Texas, his third robbery in five years.
JL Hunter "Red" Rountree faces a maximum 20-year sentence if convicted of robbing the Texan bank on 12 August.
When asked how he pleaded, Mr Rountree initially responded "not guilty" but then changed his reply to "guilty". A sentencing date has not been set.
Mr Rountree is said to have carried out three bank robberies since 1998 as revenge after he was made bankrupt.

Ahmed Qurei (right) was chosen as prime minister last month
Arafat's premier 'to end chaos'
The man appointed to head an emergency Palestinian cabinet has stressed his commitment to peace and ending "chaos".
Ahmed Qurei was named prime minister by Yasser Arafat to run the new cabinet for a maximum term of two months.
Mr Qurei said his aim was to "get out of this situation of chaos in the Palestinian territories".
The territories are tense after a Palestinian suicide bomber killed 19 Israelis including children in a packed Haifa restaurant on Saturday.
That attack sparked renewed calls in Israel to eject Mr Arafat.
The BBC's Barbara Plett in Ramallah says Mr Arafat's decision, which ends lengthy consultations about the cabinet's composition, is a desperate measure to project leadership where there has been none.
He was reportedly consulting his security chiefs on Monday as the Israeli Government maintained silence over his fate in deference to the Jewish holy day, Yom Kippur.
Israeli troops have sealed off part of the Palestinian territories for the holy day and reportedly shot dead a Palestinian man when he crossed a closed road in the Gaza Strip on Monday.
Hamas militants fired mortars at Jewish settlements in Gaza overnight, in retaliation for an Israeli air strike on an alleged Palestinian militants' base in Syria.

Pakistani Sunni militant killed (Tariq was said to have enemies)
Pakistani Sunni militant leader Maulana Azam Tariq has been shot dead in the capital, Islamabad.
He was among five people killed when the vehicle they were travelling in was attacked by gunmen on the outskirts of the city on Monday, police say.
Mr Tariq, 41, was the head of the Sunni militant group Sipah-e-Sahaba and a member of parliament. No group has said it carried out the attack.
Friday's attack was another example of sectarian violence
Security has been stepped up in the southern city of Karachi - especially around Christian churches and Shia mosques.
Both Shia and Sunni leaders have been given extra police protection.
Monday's killing comes three days after seven people were killed in an attack against a bus carrying Shias in Karachi.
