Bremer's statement in full
US administrator Paul Bremer confirmed at a press conference that Saddam Hussein was captured on Saturday near his hometown of Tikrit.
Saddam Hussein 'arrested in Iraq' Sunday, 14 December, 2003, 10:25 GMT
Ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has been arrested in Tikrit, an unconfirmed report says.
He was detained in his ancestral home town of Tikrit, official Iranian news agency IRNA quoted Iraqi Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani as saying.
The US Defence Department said it had no confirmation of the report.
Saddam Hussein is the most wanted man on the list issued by US authorities but has not been seen since Baghdad fell to US forces in April.
Intensive search
A spokeswoman for US-led coalition forces in Baghdad said that a "very important" announcement would be made at a news conference at 1200 GMT but would not give further details.
Nazem Dabag, representative in Iran of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) also said that Saddam Hussein had been arrested.
Saddam Hussein has been the subject of intensive searches by US-led forces in Iraq but previous attempts to locate him have proved unsuccessful.
On 22 July his sons, Uday and Qusay, were killed in a raid by US forces in the northern city of Mosul.

EU envoy supports Sri Lanka peace
European Union envoy Chris Patten has said the world wants peace in Sri Lanka, after a controversial meeting with the Tamil Tiger rebels' leader.
Mr Patten said he had asked the rebels to abandon violence "once and for all".
A spokesman for rebel chief Velupillai Prabhakaran said the Tigers also wanted peace - but the government had to push the process forward.
Protesters in Sri Lanka have accused Mr Patten of giving the Tigers legitimacy by meeting their leader.
There were angry scenes outside Mr Patten's hotel on Tuesday, as about 100 protesters burnt his effigy and called him a "white Tiger".

European summit ends in failure
Berlusconi: "Several possible solutions"
European Union leaders have failed to reach agreement on a constitution at the Brussels summit, an Italian foreign ministry spokesman has said.
The talks were deadlocked by Poland and Spain's refusal to surrender voting rights secured at a summit in Nice three years ago.
