Huntley murdered 10-year-olds Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman
Huntley guilty of Soham murders Last Updated: Wednesday, 17 December, 2003, 15:05 GMT
Ian Huntley has been found guilty of the murders of Soham schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman and given two life sentences.
As the verdicts came in, it emerged Huntley, 29, had been accused of having sex with underage girls and rape several times in the past.
Home Secretary David Blunkett has now ordered an inquiry into how Huntley got a job at a school despite suspicions he was a threat to children.
Maxine Carr, 26, was given three and a half years for conspiring to pervert the course of justice.
The classroom assistant was cleared of two counts of assisting an offender.
Sentencing Huntley, Mr Justice Moses told him: "One of these girls died knowing her friend had been attacked or killed by you.
"As Kevin Wells called out their names, you pretended to help the search.
"Three days later, you demonstrated the extent of your merciless cynicism, offering that father some words of regret.
"Your tears have never been for them, only for yourself."
Later at a press conference the parents of the two schoolgirls thanked the police, the community in Soham and the media for their support.
Kevin Wells, father of Holly, spoke of a "great sense of relief" at the verdict.
He said: "There was no sense of euphoria, just a relief that we've got to the end of the process."
He also praised the "amazing" family liaison officers whose work had made their difficult journey over the past year and a half "bearable".
'Callous child killer'
Det Chief Supt Chris Stevenson, who led the search for the girls, said Huntley was a "calculating and callous child killer".
He said only Huntley knew why he had killed Holly and Jessica.
"Perhaps one day he might demonstrate a sliver of humanity and explain why he did what he did on that terrible day last August."
The 10-year-olds vanished from the Cambridgeshire town on 4 August 2002. Their bodies were found in a ditch on 17 August.
The girls' bodies were found by accident at Lakenheath RAF base on 17 August.
Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman died in August 2002
