Functional inventory
-Functional inventory is viewed in terms of its seven functions:
1. Cycle stocks
-The portion of a company's inventory depleted through normal sale or use and replished through routine ordering process.
-This type of stocks refers to the amount of inventory the firm regularly consumes during normal business activities.
2. Goods in processes
-It is needed because of the time necessary in manufacturing goods, and goods in transit.
3. Safety stocks
-It protect against the uncertainties of demand, long lead times.
-It protect against the negatives and consequences being out of stocks when the demand increase unexpectedly.
4. Seasonal stocks
-A firm accumulate and hold in advance of season when needed.
5. Promotional stocks
-Hold this stock so that the company's logistic system can respond quickly and effectively to a marketing promotion or a special prize deal that a firm offer to its customer.
6. Speculative stock
-It is associated with material needed that the company involve in manufacturing or assembly operations.
7. Dead stock
-This is stock that has no value for normal business purposes.
-This stock can be shipped to other market or disposed of.

Inventory carrying costs
1. Capital costs
-It sometimes called interest or opportunity cost.
-This is the cost of capital tied in inventory, in contrast to having capital used in some other finanically productive ways.
-It is generally is largest component of inventory carrying cost, and usually is expressed as percentage of the value of the inventory being held.
2. Storage space costs
-Include handling costs associated with moving product into and out of inventory, as well as costs such as rent, heat and lights.
3. Inventory service costs
-Include insurances and taxes.
-This type of cost may be depending on the value and the type of product, and the risk of loss or damage.
4. Inventory risk costs
-It reflects the real possibility that the dollar value of inventory may decline for reason largely beyond corporate control.
-Risks are included obsolescence, damage, pilferage and shrinkage.
