CBS employee posts bail in Letterman plot
Halderman’s alleged crime may have been motivated by debts
NEW YORK - A CBS newsman who prosecutors said was desperate and deep in debt was charged Friday with trying to blackmail David Letterman for $2 million in a plot that forced the late night comic to acknowledge having sex with some of the women who have worked for him.
The bizarre case created a messy legal and professional problem for one of CBS' most valuable personalities. Commentators and bloggers quickly accused Letterman of hypocrisy because he has made a career of mocking politicians mercilessly, often for their sexual transgressions.
From a strictly business perspective, Letterman's revelations on Thursday's show were an immediate success: His overnight ratings were up 38 percent over the same night a week ago, the Nielsen Co. said.
It remains to be seen whether Letterman will suffer long-term damage just as his career appears to be peaking. Letterman has taken over as the king of late-night in the ratings this summer, and last week he beat NBC's Conan O'Brien for the first time among young viewers.
Robert J. "Joe" Halderman, a producer for the true-crime show "48 Hours Mystery," pleaded not guilty in a Manhattan court as he was arraigned on one count of attempted first-degree grand larceny, punishable by five to 15 years in prison. He was released after posting $200,000 bail.
Halderman’s connection to Letterman was not immediately clear, but public records show that until August, he lived in Norwalk, Conn., with Stephanie Birkitt, a 34-year-old woman who works on the “Late Show” staff and used to work at “48 Hours.”
Birkitt was an assistant to Letterman on the “Late Show” and frequently appeared on camera with the host in comedy bits. Last month, Birkitt moved to Manhattan’s upper West Side. There was no answer Friday at a phone listed in her name.
Was there more than one woman? It was unclear how many women were involved in relationships with Letterman, 62, who married longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko in March. The couple began dating in 1986 and have a son, Harry, born in November 2003.
All the affairs took place before Letterman’s marriage, said Tom Keaney, spokesman for Letterman’s production company, Worldwide Pants. Keaney also said Letterman “is not in violation” of the company’s harassment policy “and no one has ever raised a complaint against him.”
CBS issued a statement Friday: “We think it was appropriate for Dave to disclose the matter publicly as he has, and we are continuing to cooperate with authorities.”
CBS would not address questions about whether Letterman faced any disciplinary actions for relationships with subordinates. CBS News also declined to address questions about whether Halderman’s alleged actions call into question any of the work he has done for the news division.
David Lande, a New York City-based civil attorney whose cases have included sexual harassment, said Letterman presumably was in a position of power with a voice in hiring, firing and promotions.
“So, to the extent that he had control over these factors with the women he was involved with, he could be subject to liability,” he said. “I am sure CBS lawyers are reviewing the matter very carefully.”
Shanti Atkins, president of ELT, a firm that consults on ethics and sex in the workplace issues, said Letterman, his company and CBS could also be vulnerable to claims of sexual favoritism by others in the company if they believe people got ahead because they were sleeping with the boss.
Debt motivated alleged blackmail? Assistant District Attorney Judy Salwen told the judge Halderman was in debt, but did not elaborate.
“The evidence is compelling,” she said. “It shows the defendant is desperate, and he is capable of doing anything.”
The prosecutor said Halderman gave the talk show host a package of materials that “contained clear, explicit and actual threats that indicate this defendant ... (wanted to) destroy the reputation of Mr. Letterman and to submit him and his family to humiliation and ridicule.”
Halderman, hands cuffed behind his back, stared at the floor during most of Friday’s court hearing and said only “not guilty.”
His lawyer, Gerald Shargel, said Halderman worked at CBS for 27 years and had no prior criminal record. He described him as an involved father who coached soccer, baseball and football and has two children, ages 11 and 18.
“This story is far more complicated than what you heard this afternoon,” Shargel said outside court, but he would not elaborate.
Halderman earned about $214,000 in 2007. He was ordered in 2007 to pay his ex-wife $6,800 per month in child and spousal support until May 2011, when the payments will be reduced to $5,966 until May 2014, according to papers filed in Stamford Superior Court.
Viewers show sympathy, disgust for Letterman Vote: Has your opinion of Letterman changed? Brilliant TV hour crafted from woes Newsweek: 10 reasons why the scandal won't matter Advertisers stick by David Letterman He had asked for a reduction to $2,039 per month because his ex-wife, Patty Montet, was sharing a house in New Canaan with a man. But Montet argued — and the judge agreed — that her living arrangement was for convenience and not romantic. Montet also claimed Halderman was getting $1,500 a month from Birkitt.
“Mr. Halderman claims he is struggling financially, but it is difficult to see what, other than mismanagement and extravagant spending, is the reason for this,” Montet’s attorneys said in the court file. “His is a world of golf trips, vacations, increasing 401k assets, comprehensive benefits, security in employment, earnings as an award-winning producer for CBS, and home ownership.”

Fernando Alonso Q&A: winning for Ferrari would be very special After months of speculation, it is finally official - Fernando Alonso will race for Ferrari in 2010. Although the timing of the announcement, between back-to-back races, was a bit tricky for those stuck on planes on their way to Japan for this weekend's race, the media pack are pleased to see the longstanding rumours finally become reality. And as they descended on the Suzuka paddock on Thursday, there was just one man who could answer all their burning questions about the move - Alonso himself…
Q: Fernando, how special will it be to drive for Ferrari?
Fernando Alonso: Very special, no doubt. All drivers dream one day of driving for Ferrari and this dream has come true for me. I'm extremely happy and I'm ready for the challenge in 2010!
Q: You must be very happy that the news is out now, after so many months of denial?
FA: Well, that hasn’t changed a lot. I had anticipated that I would arrive at Ferrari for 2011, but now that things have changed, and I’m here a year early, I am really happy that I don’t have to wait another year.
Q: Will you be able to match up to Ferrari legend Michael Schumacher and his seven world championship titles?
FA: It will obviously not be easy and I will not arrive there just to do the same as Michael. It’s true, I would like to do the same as Michael, by winning many championships, but I think that it will be very difficult. I arrive there to be in the best team possible for my career and I think that Ferrari and I share many things together - the passion for competition, to give the maximum at every race. In one word it was the best destination for my career.
Q: Will you take some of your Renault mechanics with you?
FA: No that will not be he case. That was incorrect media information. I think at Ferrari they have enough professionals to do the job.
Q: Over the last few years it’s been a battle between Ferrari and McLaren for the title. This year everything is different. Has that changed your opinion about your move?
FA: No. This year obviously has been a strange season. The top teams have not been able to fight for the championship, but I think that Ferrari and McLaren are still the best two teams to drive for. And I am sure they will fight for the championship again.
Q: Two weeks ago there were questions about your involvement in the Singapore incident. Did that complicate the negotiations with Ferrari or affect the timing of the announcement?
FA: No, not at all.
Q: What will you bring to Ferrari in terms of work methods or mentality?
FA: Hopefully I can give them the maximum performance in the car from a driver point of view. And outside of the car, hopefully I can be part of the team and be as professional as possible. My guess is that all the drivers want to achieve that with your team. Sometimes you succeed, sometimes not.
Q: Have you already visited the factory at Maranello?
FA: No, I have not.
Q: How is your relationship with Felipe Massa?
FA: We have a very good relationship. Felipe is a very quick driver and a very great personality. We are both Latin - Brazilian and Spanish - so that should work very well. Furthermore Felipe has been in the team for years, so he can help me to adapt to the team as quickly as possible. And with Giancarlo (Fisichella) in the team it will also very good for me, as I raced alongside him for two years at Renault and now he will also help me at my new team.
Q: When did you sign the contract?
FA: Very late - actually it was this week.
Q: Who should replace you at Renault?
FA: I have no idea but hopefully they will get a good driver, so that they can fight for races and championships over the next few years. Everybody knows how I rate Kubica, he is one of my best friends and one of the best drivers. If they have any chance to get him, I would recommend that.
Q: What do you think you can give Ferrari that they don’t already have?
FA: I don’t know. All I can say is that I will make sure that all my input there, my spirit, will be available 365 days a year.
Q: When will you be released from Renault to join Ferrari?
FA: Nothing has been decided at the moment.
Q: Did you speak with Flavio (Briatore) about all this?
FA: Yes, of course. I was in touch with Flavio two months ago when we were talking about 2011 at the time. Over the last few days, when the plan has changed for 2010, I have spoken with him a couple of times. He was very happy for me. He knows what Ferrari means and is very happy for my career.
Q: How is Flavio doing? We hear that he is seeking revenge?
FA: That’s difficult to answer. I only spoke with him on the telephone. But he doesn’t seem to worry. Yesterday he was relaxing on the beach so he must be okay.
Q: If the rumours are true Kimi Raikkonen may join McLaren for 2010. From your experience, how will he get along with Lewis hamilton?
FA: Maybe we should wait for the confirmation because at the moment it is only speculation, and so it’s better not to say anything just in case it doesn’t happen.
Q: Who do you think will win the championship? Jenson Button or Rubens Barrichello? And do you have any preference?
FA: No preference. Both are very nice guys and would both deserve it. I would say that Jenson has a very high chance to win the championship with the advantage he has now. I would rate his chances at 90 percent.
Q: You have already left Renault and come back. Do you think you will come back again?
FA: It is impossible to say impossible, but I really think that Ferrari will be my last team. Leaving Ferrari to change team is always a step backwards. Ferrari is more than a team, and I want to leave Formula One from there.
Q: You once said that you are thinking of quitting Formula One racing in two years. So how long is your contract?
FA: The contract is three years, with some options to continue. So hopefully I can continue as long as they want and I can finish my career here with lots of wins.
Q: Many believe that you are the most complete driver on the grid, but you’ve been unable to show that for quite some time. Will your move to Ferrari enable you to really show your quality as a driver?
FA: I think it is impossible to say which driver is better than another. I was lucky to have some competitive cars in the past, and I proved that I can do the job when the car is good. Sure with Ferrari I will have a competitive car. They are the best in the history of Formula One so in that case they will be able to fight for championships.
Q: What would it mean for you to win a title with Ferrari?
FA: That would make me extremely happy. Winning a championship is always something special and winning with Ferrari is even more special.

The Most Outrageous Cars From Frankfurt
By James Tate of MSN Autos
Every two years, the Frankfurt Motor Show brings out the best from each manufacturer — particularly the European contingent. And while there are inevitably a few concepts stretching a bit into the wild side each time around, this year took the cake. From the quest for limitless horsepower to the golden goose of incredible fuel economy, carmakers from around the globe are pushing the boundaries of transportation. Want an all-electric R8? Audi can help you out. How about a Mazda sculpted in the grand style of European pint-sized speedsters? No problem. While you're about as likely to see some of the wildest concepts show up on dealer lots as Ford is to start cranking out flying cars, some of these outrageous designs will soon be rolling into showrooms around the globe.
BMW Vision EfficientDynamics BMW Vision EfficientDynamics If you think this is one bizarre-looking car, remember what your mom told you about beauty being more than skin deep. Push past the underbody lighting and strange lines and you'll find the most appetizing recipe for a green machine we've seen so far. BMW says the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept can kick to 60 mph in around 4.8 seconds, courtesy of a turbodiesel plug-in hybrid drivetrain. All the high-tech, fuel-saving goodies provide this concept with a fuel-economy rating of around 62.6 mpg. Part of both the performance and green rating come courtesy of two electric motors: a 33 horsepower unit mounted between the engine and transmission and an 80 horsepower motor positioned at the front axles.
Audi e-Tron Concept BMW isn't the only company at Frankfurt looking to prove that green doesn't have to equal boring. Audi pulled the sheet off the e-Tron Concept — a fully electric car based on the mighty R8. The company also wasted no time in showing off a new V10 version of the car with 100 extra horsepower, but the e-Tron uses four electric motors to provide its power. You'd better sit down for the stats on this concept. Audi says the four motors put out a combined 313 horsepower and a jaw-dropping 3,319 lb-ft of torque. We kid you not — 3,319 lb-ft.
Fiat Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari Ferrari made some big waves in Germany with its new 458 Italia, but corporate cousin Fiat tried to make a Prancing Horse-sized splash of its own. As you may have guessed, Fiat's Abarth 695 Tributo Ferrari has fewer ponies under the hood than the Italian-made supercars it hopes to celebrate. The little 500 is powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a surprising 180 horsepower, and makes use of an automated manual transmission. Fiat has also thrown in more aggressive body kit and dipped the whole package in Scuderia Red to get most of us as close as we'll ever be to the Ferrari experience.
Peugeot BB1 Concept If you got a giggle out of Fiat's Ferrari tribute, French automaker Peugeot's BB1 Concept should be a sidesplitter. The company is dead serious when it says the BB1 is the result of a twisted tryst between scooter and car. Supposedly, the concept can seat four people in the same footprint as the smart fortwo. Tiny electric motors at each wheel crank out a minuscule 20 horsepower combined, and batteries are recharged in part by a solar-panel roof. Top speed? Range? Peugeot's not saying, but we can expect figures in the glorified golf-cart zone. Don't expect to see the BB1 taking up spots at your local Starbucks any time soon.
Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Mercedes-Benz has been responsible for some beautiful cars in its long history, but the 1950s 300SL coupe takes the cake as one of the most iconic. The company has resurrected the car's gull-wing design with its new SLS AMG supercar. Aside from a unique entry point, the car gets its power from a mighty 6.2-liter V8 engine with 571 horsepower. The eco-minded needn't worry, though. Mercedes says it's already hard at work on an electric version of the car. Given the astronomical torque figures from the Audi e-Tron, we wouldn't be too surprised if the electron-powered SLS turns out to be quicker than the gasoline car.
MINI Coupe Concept The MINI name celebrated its 50th anniversary recently, and parent company BMW celebrated with two hot new concepts, one of which is a coupe. Whereas MINI has traditionally stuck to what works with its 5-passenger hatch, the new chopped concept allows room for only two. Fewer seats mean fewer pounds in a car that weighs next to nothing already, and BMW says a sharpened suspension and potent 4-cylinder engine make the Coupe Concept quicker than anything that MINI is currently producing. Will we ever see the new MINI on the street? Judging by the concept's overwhelmingly positive reception, we wouldn't be surprised.
Weismann MF5 Roadster Haven't heard of Weismann? The company is a tiny German manufacturer specializing in pricey sports cars, and the new MF5 roadster is one of the most powerful versions to date. According to the company, a tuned version of BMW's M5-sourced V10 engine puts 507 horsepower to the rear wheels. Thanks to a lightweight design and some special gearing, the car can manage a zero to 60 mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 192 mph.Of course, a production run of just 55 examples will ensure that only those who can afford the $250,000 price tag will have heard of the company in 10 years.
Tesla Model S Sedan Tesla secured a sizable loan from the U.S. government to produce its Model S electric sedan, and the company celebrated by unveiling the car in Frankfurt. Harkened as the "people's Tesla," the car should cost around $50,000 after tax incentives and do the zero to 60 mph dash in around 5.5 seconds, the company says. You can opt for one of three battery packs, each with a different range and price tag. How long will it take to top off the cells? That depends on what kind of outlet you use, but the company says juice from an external direct-current supply will put the Model S at 100 percent in 45 minutes.
Mazda MX-5 Superlight Concept Mazda is credited with single-handedly returning the roadster to its inexpensive, lightweight roots with the Miata. The world's favorite drop-top just celebrated its 20th anniversary, and the Japanese automaker decided to mark the occasion with an exercise in extremes: the MX-5 Superlight Concept. Penned in the same vein as the elegant and simple European speedsters of old, the Superlight sacrifices superfluous hardware like the windshield and retractable top to the gods of speed. An elongated aluminum hood throws in a dash of class, and a host of go-fast goodies accompanies otherwise stock powerplant hardware. Chances of seeing this thing in production are next to nil, but that doesn't stop it from being one of our favorites of the Frankfurt show.
Brabus E V12 Leave it to Brabus, the tuner of all things Mercedes-Benz, to flip the green movement the bird in the grandest style possible. The company has managed to wring a full 788 horsepower from the S65 AMG's 6.3-liter V12 engine. Even more impressive is the lofty 1,047 lb-ft of torque — a figure so large the company limits the actual output to 811 lb-ft to keep the transmission from exploding on acceleration. All of that visceral grunt gets the E V12 to a top speed of 211 mph and helps it click off to 60 mph in four seconds flat. If you have to ask what kind of fuel economy this thing gets, you're at the wrong booth. Oh — the price? $726,980.

不過見到Star Movies下晝有部戲叫《回憶愚生》(Flashbacks of a Fool) 覺得幾得意
尋晚HBO MAX播《阿飛正傳》添,原來英文名叫《Rebel without a Cause》

In the first year of the German occupation of France, Shosanna Dreyfus (Melanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.
Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish American soldiers to perform swift, shocking acts of retribution. Later known to their enemy as "the basterds," Raine''s squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquis, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own.... Employing pulp and propaganda in equal measure, Quentin Tarantino''s INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS weaves together infamous, oppressed, real and larger-than-life stories of WWII.

Hybrids: When Sci-Fi and Horror Collide
What happens when you combine science fiction with horror? You get some of the best movies of both genres By Don Kaye ~ Special to MSN Movies
Science fiction is, loosely, about the way living, thinking beings interact with the mysteries of the universe through the use of science or technology. Horror is about the emotions that all mortal beings feel when confronted with the unknown and the unexplainable. But what happens when you combine the two? Do you end up with the old "two great tastes that taste great together" scenario, or are these two flavors that should never end up in the same stew? (Note: My editor loves cooking metaphors.)
The truth is that science fiction and horror have coexisted for a long, long time, and really share the same roots. When H.G. Wells, the father of modern science fiction, wrote "The War of the Worlds," he created a story that was as frightening as it was awe-inspiring. More contemporary authors like Stephen King ("The Mist") have used pulp sci-fi as the basis for some of their best-known tales. And when it comes to movies, the two genres have been crossing into each other's territory almost since cinema was born: Just take a look at Thomas Edison's 1910 adaptation of "Frankenstein," arguably the first sci-fi/horror hybrid to ever grace the screen.
As a fan of both genres, I love the crossovers; and I know a lot of other fans do, too. There's something inescapably terrifying about facing an ancient evil in a futuristic setting or using modern science to bring something unspeakable to life. It says that even the best laid plans of the most brilliant minds, or the greatest inventions of our relatively advanced culture, still cannot map out or fathom some of the darkest depths of existence. "Pandorum," starring Ben Foster and Dennis Quaid as two astronauts who wake up to a horrifying new reality on an abandoned spaceship, is the latest sci-fi/horror hybrid to grace the screen. Here's a few more of our favorite such concoctions:
