ICQ worm (to be named)

Description

ICQ worm spreads via ICQ network. The worm sends a message
"www.jokeworld.biz :) LOL" or "http://www.jokeworld.biz/index.html" to all
the entries of ICQ contact list. It uses a IFRAME vulnerability (MS01-020)
in Internet Explorer to execute a specially crafted ICQ Sound Scheme file
(.scm) automatically.

The worm creates a "SYSMON" folder to the Windows System folder and
copies itself as "sysmon.exe" to this folder. Then it creates a startup key
in System Registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
"sysmon" = %sysdir%\SYSMON\sysmon.exe

So it's run every time when Windows start.

When the worm is running, it displays the following message:



Once infected, the worm will disable most application on the
infected system such as ICQ, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office etc.

Payload

1. Send a malicious URL to all the entries of ICQ contact list.
2. Disable most application on the infected system.

3. Render the computer not able to shut down normally.

Solution

Workaround


This worm is still under investigation, currently there is no
solution to clean it completely. Pay attention to HKCERT and Antivirus
Vendor for further information. The following is avaiable workaround:

1. Re-enable applications execution on the infected computer.

1.. Reboot the Computer. Press "F8" many times during machine
reboot until the bootup selection menu is shown. Choose "Safe Mode" to boot
up Windows.
(Remark: Running the worm cleaning program in Safe Mode
guarantees that no file will be locked by system and can be removed without
problem.)
2.. For Windows 98/ME/XP,
i) run "msconfig" (system configuration utility) and go to
"Startup" tab.



ii) Locate Startup Item of “sysmon” and disable it.

iii) Restart the Windows.

For Windows 2000,

We strongly recommends that you back up the registry before
making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in
permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify the specified keys only.

Do not attempt to do the following steps unless you are
comfortable:

i) Open Registry Editor. To do this, click Start>Run, type
Regedit, then press Enter.

ii) In the left panel, double-click the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>Windows>CurrentVersion>Run
In the right panel, locate and delete the entry:
sysmon = %Windows%\SYSTEM32\sysmon.exe

iii) Close Registry Editor.

iv) Restart the Windows.

2. Apply the Internet Explorer patch

Since this worm uses a vulnerability of Microsoft Internet Explorer
to infect the system, please apply the latest Internet Explorer patches:

Upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.01 SP2 or
Upgrade to Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or above
Upgrade to Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 or above
